WHAT IS DRY NEEDLING?
Dry needling is a skilled, evidence-based treatment used by physical therapists to reduce pain, restore movement, and improve muscle function. It involves the precise insertion of a very thin, sterile, solid filament needle into tight or irritated muscle tissue—often referred to as trigger points.
Unlike injections, dry needling uses no medication. The term “dry” simply means the needle itself is solid. By targeting dysfunctional muscle fibers, dry needling helps calm overactive muscles, improve blood flow, and reset normal movement patterns. This allows the muscle to relax, decreases pain signals, and creates an environment for healing.
Many patients notice improved mobility and reduced discomfort shortly after treatment. Dry needling is often combined with movement, corrective exercises, and manual therapy to address the root cause of pain—not just the symptoms.
Dry needling is commonly used for muscle tightness, tendon irritation, headaches, neck and back pain, joint stress, and repetitive-use injuries. When performed by a licensed and trained provider, it is a safe and effective tool to help people move better and return to their daily activities with less pain.
